Important Dams & River Valley Projects

I. First Principle – Why Dams Matter for Prelims

UPSC frames questions like:

  • Which dam is built on which river?

  • Which river valley project lies in which state?

  • Which dams are on tributaries, not main rivers?

Memorisation fails here. River logic saves you.

II. Bhakra–Nangal Project

River: Sutlej
State: Himachal Pradesh / Punjab

Part of Indus river system.

Prelims trap:

Sutlej belongs to Indus system, not Ganga.

III. Tehri Dam

River: Bhagirathi (tributary of Ganga)
State: Uttarakhand

High Himalayan dam.

UPSC may test whether it is on Yamuna. It is not.

IV. Sardar Sarovar Dam

River: Narmada
State: Gujarat

West-flowing river.

Prelims trap:

Narmada drains into Arabian Sea, not Bay of Bengal.

V. Hirakud Dam

River: Mahanadi
State: Odisha

One of the longest earthen dams.

Mahanadi flows into Bay of Bengal.

VI. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

River: Krishna
State: Telangana / Andhra Pradesh

Krishna is east-flowing.

Prelims trap:

Krishna does not drain into Arabian Sea.

VII. Tungabhadra Dam

River: Tungabhadra
State: Karnataka

Tungabhadra is a tributary of Krishna.

UPSC may test tributary logic.

VIII. Rihand Dam

River: Rihand (tributary of Son)
State: Uttar Pradesh

Son is a tributary of Ganga.

Prelims trap:

Rihand is not directly on Ganga.

IX. Damodar Valley Project

River: Damodar
States: Jharkhand & West Bengal

Damodar is tributary of Hooghly (Ganga distributary).

Sometimes called “Ruhr of India” due to industrial region.

X. Indira Sagar Dam

River: Narmada
State: Madhya Pradesh

Another Narmada project.

UPSC may list multiple dams on same river.

XI. West-Flowing vs East-Flowing Dam Logic

West-flowing rivers:

Narmada
Tapi

Most major dam projects on these are in Gujarat and MP.

East-flowing rivers:

Godavari
Krishna
Mahanadi
Ganga

Large delta-forming systems.

If you know river direction, elimination becomes easy.

XII. Common Prelims Traps

  • Mixing Bhakra (Sutlej) with Beas.

  • Thinking Tehri is on Yamuna.

  • Forgetting Narmada flows west.

  • Confusing Krishna and Godavari dams.

  • Not knowing tributary relationships.

XIII. Likely Question Patterns

  • Which dam is built on Narmada?

  • Which of the following projects are on tributaries of Ganga?

  • Match dams with rivers.

  • Arrange dams from north to south.

River + dam logic is guaranteed elimination power.
