Important Lakes, Gulfs & Coastal Features

I. Gulfs of India – Directional Clarity

India has two major gulfs on the western coast:

Gulf of Kutch
Gulf of Khambhat

Both are in Gujarat.

Gulf of Kutch lies to the north.
Gulf of Khambhat lies to the south.

Prelims trap:

Do not reverse their positions.

On the eastern side, we do not have major “gulfs” like west coast.

II. Gulf of Kutch

Located between:

Kutch Peninsula (north)
Kathiawar Peninsula (south)

High tidal range.

Important for marine biodiversity.

UPSC may ask which gulf lies between two peninsulas.

III. Gulf of Khambhat

Located south of Gulf of Kutch.

Major rivers draining into it:

Narmada
Tapi

This is crucial.

Prelims trap:

If asked where Narmada drains → Arabian Sea via Gulf of Khambhat.

IV. Important Coastal Features

1️⃣ Rann of Kutch

Located in Gujarat.

Seasonal salt marsh.

Do not confuse with Thar Desert.

2️⃣ Chilika Lake

State: Odisha

Largest brackish water lagoon in India.

Located along east coast near Bay of Bengal.

Prelims trap:

Chilika is a lagoon, not a freshwater lake.

3️⃣ Pulicat Lake

Located between:

Andhra Pradesh
Tamil Nadu

Second largest brackish water lagoon.

UPSC may ask which lake lies on border of two states.

4️⃣ Vembanad Lake

State: Kerala

Largest lake in Kerala.

Backwater system.

Important for coastal geography.

V. Himalayan Lakes

1️⃣ Wular Lake

State: Jammu & Kashmir

Freshwater lake.

Prelims trap:

It is not in Himachal or Uttarakhand.

2️⃣ Dal Lake

State: Jammu & Kashmir

Urban lake near Srinagar.

VI. High-Altitude Lakes

1️⃣ Pangong Tso

Located in Ladakh.

Extends into China.

Brackish water lake.

Prelims trap:

Do not assume all Himalayan lakes are freshwater.

2️⃣ Tsomgo Lake

Located in Sikkim.

Glacial lake.

VII. Delta & Coastal Mapping Logic

West Coast:

Narrow coastal plain.
Estuaries common.

East Coast:

Wide coastal plain.
Large deltas (Ganga, Godavari, Krishna, Mahanadi).

UPSC may ask which coast has wider plains.

VIII. Island Groups (Basic Recall)

Lakshadweep:

Located in Arabian Sea.
Coral islands.

Andaman & Nicobar:

Located in Bay of Bengal.
Volcanic origin (Barren Island active volcano).

Prelims trap:

Lakshadweep is coral.
Andaman has volcanic origin.

IX. Common Prelims Traps

  • Mixing Gulf of Kutch & Khambhat.

  • Thinking Chilika is freshwater.

  • Forgetting Narmada drains into Arabian Sea.

  • Confusing Lakshadweep with Andaman.

  • Mixing Pangong Tso location.

X. Likely Question Styles

  • Which of the following rivers drain into Gulf of Khambhat?

  • Which lakes are brackish?

  • Which coast has wider plains?

  • Which island group is of coral origin?

Coastal mapping + river linkage = powerful elimination zone.
