Major Mountain Passes of India

 I. Why Mountain Passes Matter for Prelims

UPSC frequently asks:

  • Which connects India to which country?

  • Which lies in Himalayas vs Western Ghats?

Passes are pure elimination territory.

II. Mountain Passes in Western Himalayas (Jammu & Kashmir / Ladakh)

Western Ghats:
Internal connectivity gap (e.g., Palghat).

UPSC may give list of passes and ask which lie in Western Ghats.

IX. Common Prelims Traps

  • Mixing Rohtang and Zoji La.

  • Forgetting Lipulekh is tri-junction.

  • Confusing Palghat Gap with Himalayan pass.

  • Mixing Sikkim and Arunachal passes.

  • Which of the following passes lie in Uttarakhand?

  • Which connect India to China?

  • Which are located in Western Ghats?

  • Arrange from west to east along Himalayas.
