Mineral Belts & Industrial Regions

I. First Principle – India’s Major Mineral Belts

India’s mineral resources are concentrated mainly in the Peninsular Plateau.

They are not evenly distributed.

Three major belts frequently tested:

  1. Chota Nagpur Plateau Belt

  2. Odisha–Jharkhand Belt

  3. Karnataka–Goa Belt

II. Chota Nagpur Plateau – The Mineral Heartland

Located in:

Jharkhand
Northern Odisha
Western West Bengal
Chhattisgarh

Rich in:

Iron ore
Coal
Manganese
Bauxite

This region is the backbone of India’s heavy industry.

Prelims trap:

Coal reserves are largely in eastern India, not western India.

III. Odisha–Jharkhand Iron Ore Belt

Major iron ore producing states:

Odisha
Jharkhand
Chhattisgarh

These supply raw material to steel plants.

UPSC may give list of states and ask which are major iron ore producers.

IV. Coal Distribution

Major coal producing states:

Jharkhand
Odisha
Chhattisgarh
West Bengal
Madhya Pradesh

Coal is concentrated in the eastern & central parts of India.

Prelims trap:

Punjab and Haryana are not major coal producers.

V. Bauxite & Aluminium

Major bauxite producing states:

Odisha
Gujarat
Jharkhand
Maharashtra

Odisha is very important here.

UPSC may mix Gujarat and Odisha for bauxite.

VI. Petroleum & Natural Gas

Onshore and offshore sources:

Mumbai High – Offshore (Arabian Sea)
Assam – Onshore
Gujarat – Onshore

Krishna–Godavari Basin – Offshore gas.

Prelims trap:

Petroleum is not concentrated in mineral plateau only.

VII. Major Industrial Regions (High Yield)

1️⃣ Mumbai–Pune Industrial Region

Western India.

Based on:

Port access
Petroleum
Engineering industries

2️⃣ Kolkata–Haldia Industrial Region

Based on:

Coal
Iron ore
River transport

Located near Chota Nagpur Plateau.

3️⃣ Chota Nagpur Industrial Belt

Steel plants:

Jamshedpur
Bokaro
Rourkela
Durgapur

UPSC loves steel plant–state matching.

4️⃣ Chennai–Coimbatore Region

Southern industrial zone.

Automobile & textile industries.

VIII. Damodar Valley Region

Located in:

Jharkhand & West Bengal.

Known for:

Coal
Thermal power
Steel plants

Sometimes called “Ruhr of India.”

Prelims trap:

Do not confuse with Mahanadi basin.

IX. Common Prelims Traps

  • Thinking mineral wealth is in Himalayan region.

  • Confusing coal-rich states.

  • Forgetting offshore petroleum like Mumbai High.

  • Mixing steel plants and their states.

  • Placing Chota Nagpur in north India.

X. Likely Question Patterns

  • Which of the following states are major producers of iron ore?

  • Which region is known for coal and steel industries?

  • Match steel plants with states.

  • Which basin is associated with petroleum?

Economic geography + mapping = high elimination marks.
